Tanning Tips – Choosing the Correct Shade

With so many different tanning products available, and so many different shades to choose from, it’s hard to know exactly which one will suit you. To make life even more difficult, fake tan can now be applied in several forms, including creams, gels, sprays and mousses.

Tanning products: Mousse, gel, spray, wipes, cream

Tanning towel/wipes tend to give a lighter tan, as will tinted moisturisers and, depending on application, gradual tanning products.  However, most other forms of fake tan will generally provide the same tanning results.  For example, if you use St Tropez mousse you will be able to achieve the same tan tone as you would using their cream version of the exact same product.

How do you know which ‘dark’ tan is really dark and which ‘light’ tan is truly light?
The fact is, you don’t and won’t until you’re caked in the stuff.  It is always sensible to try out a patch test first. Apply the fake tan to a small area of skin, wash off after 8 hours and then you can judge the result. However, just like when you try a paint sample on a small part of your room, this is never a completely accurate test of what the entire end result will look like.

Bad tan. Tanning disaster! Wrong tan shade.

My advice for those of you who have fair skin and want to go slightly darker but are not sure how dark – do not go for ‘dark’ or even ‘medium’ tanning options. Instead, go for a ‘light’ shade and build it up to your preferred tone. A couple of applications may seem like a lot of effort, but it will be worth it as you will be in charge of the result!

If you already have a base tan, or have olive skin and want a dark result, then you can afford to go for a ‘dark’ option. However, if you are worried about the true colour and tone of the tan, then start with a ‘medium’ as it is likely that this will not show up too much on your skin, so you can judge the over all colour without a really strong result. If you are happy, then go for the ‘dark’ stuff! And enjoy looking fabulously tanned!

REVIEW: St Tropez Self Tan, Dark Bronzing Lotion

I have to begin by tSt.Tropez the ultimate tanhanking St Tropez for igniting my now huge obsession with fake tan! It was the
first GOOD product that I ever used, and I have been hooked ever since.

If you are new to fake tan or if you’re interested but unsure about what to use, I would strongly recommend St Tropez. It is easily one of the best, and most reliable tanning brands available.

St__Tropez_Self_Tan_Dark_Bronzing_Mousse_200ml_1366390526So now let’s focus on one of their fabulous products –  specifically the St. Tropez Self Tan Dark Bronzing Mousse.  I was not surprised to be completely blown away by this product. Old faithful came through again! This is their darkest, most intense colour yet and wow does it look good. Be sure not to let the words dark and intense scare you – when using St Tropez, you are always in safe hands.

Even if you are not after a really deep tan, this product, whilst being dark and intense, adapts to your skin tone. The ultra-absorbent hydrating lotion contains extra skin conditioners and protective ingredients, to provide an even, streak-free bronze finish, that tailors completely to you.

This ultimately makes it pretty much impossible to tell that you are wearing any fake tan at all. I cannot stress enough how natural this product looks. The innovative melanin technology ensures a completely realistic finish.

St-Tropez-Tan-Application-MittWhilst applying the product I was very happy to see that the liquid was dark. I definitely prefer this as you can see it going on, making it more manageable! It is a lovely, slightly thick consistency that makes it very easy to smooth onto your skin with an Applicator Mitt.

I recommend leaving it on for about 8 hours. In my opinion, it is always best to do the application before bed time and sleeping in loose fitting, dark clothes, before showering off the product in the morning. This tan drys almost instantly and your skin will feel very smooth and soft, so sleeping in it is no problem at all.

After showering you will be left with a rich, natural, even tan that will last about a week. St Tropez recommend exfoliating twice a week for an even fade, and moisturising daily for optimal results! But we all do that anyway don’t we!?

This is a brilliant fake tan, and in my opinion has the most natural results of all of the tans that I have reviewed to date. At around £30 for a 200ml bottle, I think it is worth every penny! Oh and Kate Moss loves it too…need anymore convincing?

Spray Tanning – We’ve Got It Covered!

When you’re having a spray tan, it’s easy to assume that all of the hard work will be done for you. This is mostly true, but there are certain things that you can do to ensure you look as blooming marvelous as possible!

Spray Tan TentPreparation
Firstly, essential skin prep MUST BE DONE before having a spray tan. This includes shaving/waxing any part of your body where the tan will settle. I recommended doing this at least 24 hours before your spray tan. This will give your skin time to calm down before adding a new product to it.

Legs Shaving

Always scrub your body from head to toe a few hours before a spray tan. Like with any fake tanning, scrubbing your body removes any dead skin cells and leaves you with a beautiful, smooth canvas for the tan to be applied to. I use a natural exfoliator like this one available at Boots and apply it in circular motions using exfoliating gloves.

Sanctuary Spa Covent Garden Radiance Exfoliator

It is always good to ensure that you do not have any lotions or deodorants on your skin. Depending on which tanning product it is there is always the risk that it could react with any product on your skin so I always remove everything just in case.

My final recommendation is to make sure you wear nail polish. Even if it is just a clear layer of polish, this will eliminate the risk of staining your nails, which can turn them a horrible, dull yellow colour.

What to Expect
Every spray tan is different due to the person doing it and the equipment used. However, for the most part, the spray is fairly cold and will feel sticky afterwards, this is perfectly normal.

After the spray tan you will be asked to stand still to let it dry. Resist the urge to touch your skin; you want to make sure that your tan dries completely untouched, to ensure a perfect finish!

Spray Tan 1

It is up to you what you wear during the tanning, some people like to have one in their entire birthday suit, and others will wear some form of underwear/swimwear. If you decide to keep something on, then I recommend it is dark and not your favourite pair of pants, as the tan may stain them.

The whole process is pretty quick and very simple so enjoy it in the knowledge of how great you’re going to look!
