Dress of the Month ~ September 2014

My current favourite dress this month is a recent arrival – the incredible Francine by Sottero and Midgley.  This dress is ultra glam and totally glitzy.  Think old Hollywood glamour, the kind Greta Garbo exuded!

The gown actually comes in two parts, a slinky satin slip and a lace layer that goes over it. The slip has two options, one with a super low back and another with a higher version.  This is a fabulous idea, allowing those girls who want to show off their backs to do so but also letting girls with heavier busts, who need more support or coverage for their bra, to wear this style too.

I absolutely adore the twinkle and gleam of this dress – unfortunately the designers photography shows only the light gold version where ours is the ivory, and I genuinely think the image doesn’t convey the intricacy of detail and sparkle.  This is one of those dresses that has to be seen to be truly appreciated.

Dress of the Month ~ June 2014

My favourite dress of the moment is the absolutely beautiful Tabitha by Charlotte Balbier!

Charlotte Balbier 'Tabitha' fitted lace gown with beautiful beadwork and a V neckline.

A gorgeous fitted lace gown with beautiful beadwork and a V neckline. Tabitha is one of Charlotte’s ‘Hall of Fame’ dresses, which means she is a bridal best seller. Charlotte designed this beautiful dress a few years ago and brides continue to love it!

Since we haven’t been stocking Charlotte’s collection for very long Tabitha is brand new to us, but she was definitely one of the dresses that were on our ‘must have’ list when we visited Charlotte’s showroom last year.

I love everything about this dress but mostly how soft and light the lace is! So many of our lace gowns are much heavier and sometimes even a little bulky, but this dress is the complete opposite and really means it could be the perfect option for a wedding abroad!

Dress of the Month ~ May 2014

My favourite dress in May only arrived a few weeks ago and already has me so distracted! The stunning Rosa is an exquisite beaded lace fishtail gown with a beautiful neckline and capped sleeves.

Every element of this dress is gorgeous and of such amazing quality, it really is a beautifully made dress – the inner corset ensures the fit of the dress is fabulous, the Swarovski crystals twinkle, and the lace detailing is impeccably finished. But what makes this dress stand out so much for me is the amazing pale gold colour!

In a shop full of ivory gowns, of course it’s going to stand out, but there is something just delicious about this shade – it is mega flattering against Irish skin! Somehow it works as well on dark haired girls as it does on blondes. I cannot wait to see which bride buys her first!

Dress of the Month ~ December 2013 (A little late, we know, but gorgeous none-the-less!)

This month my favourite dress is the beautiful ‘Betty’, who we’ve had in store at Cathedral Gowns for quite a while! It’s funny how a dress can hang on our rails with little attention for a year and then all of a sudden everyone loves her! I guess some bridal looks just hit the boutiques before brides are ready for them.

This dress features a gorgeous fifties inspired silhouette with a dramatic nipped in waist and full skirt. The shape of this dress will flatter a lot of body types but tends to work best on broader shouldered girls since the width of the skirt will really flatter their proportions.

The neckline is a deep curved sweetheart which can be super flattering on more petite girls since the dip helps create extra length between the chin and chest which can definitely make you look taller. The pleated bodice also works well as a figure flattering tool since the way the pleats are formed draws the eye towards your waist. There are all kinds of optical illusions in this dress!

The fabric is a gorgeous lustrous satin which holds a really nice full shape in the skirt, but the addition of a two hooped petticoat works fantastically to really exaggerate the soft fullness of the skirt. Another benefit of a petticoat is that it can help distribute the weight of the dress and make it a lot easier to walk in.

This dress features a beautiful button detail which goes right down the train, after every third button there is a gorgeous little beaded design.

But what makes the biggest statement about this dress is the elaborate Swarovski beaded waistband! It is stunning both from a distance and up close.

I love ‘Betty’ so much I’ve made her our feature dress in our Christmas window display! Pairing her with a faux fur cape and muff definitely transforms this dress into the perfect snow queen wedding gown!

Dress of the Month ~ June

My favourite dress this month is a perfect little summertime wedding dress! The lovely ‘Amber’ by Sottero & Midgley, is a fab little chiffon number that is a million times more flattering than most other chiffon bridal gowns.

Sottero and Midgley Amber Dress Gown

This gorgeous gown features the famed Sottero corsetry which really pulls in your waist and creates the perfect hourglass shape. Far too often bridal gowns made in chiffon feature a more empire line silhouette which unfortunately doesn’t flatter many girls. Whilst it is said that empire lines are perfect for pear shapes, I actually find that unless you add long bodied and tall into that equation, empire lines can actually exaggerate a big bum and hips. Thankfully though, this beauty has a long bodied corset which creates fantastic curves and really showcases your waist.

This gown features a small a-line skirt and a small puddle train. The slim fit and light weight of the skirt makes this gown ideal for wearing in the summertime. I can totally picture this dress being worn on a beach somewhere! And since it is so lightweight without much of a train, it is perfect for a beach wedding as you won’t end up trawling half the beach with you! It is also perfectly compact and would fold up nicely into your hand luggage.

The detail on this gown is sparkly but subtle. Lace appliqués with pretty beading adorn the bodice but elsewhere the detail is limited to the pleating and movement of the chiffon. It really is so pretty!

Dress of the Month ~ April

My current favourite wedding dress is such a statement dress! She is called Shelby and is definitely not a run of the mill wedding dress! A fifties style full skirted ballerina length gown, this little beauty is the perfect choice of gown for girls opting for a retro rockabilly themed wedding day look.

Since she features a natural waist and a full skirt this gown suits most body types, but is particularly good for adding curves to athletic figures and wonderfully disguises a pear shape. The high neckline and cap sleeves add a great balance to the fullness of the skirt and since the lace is sheer it offers a perfect demure option for a fuller busted girl.

SHELBY

The gown features a tulle skirt and soft lace bodice with subtly twinkling beading, and also features gorgeous little covered buttons.

This dress is gorgeous alone but also looks amazing with the addition of a sparkly crystal belt, it adds just the right amount of definition and creates a focal point of the waist.

I feel that Shelby really is a fun and cute wedding dress, and perfectly suits a more relaxed wedding day style and is the perfect dress for showing your moves on the dancefloor!

Dress of the Month ~ November

My current dress of the month is a bit of a different one – it isn’t so much the dress itself that I love, but the overall look!

Marilyn before adjustments

You see, I kinda butchered this one! It came with a completely different sash that I got sick of looking at, so I wanted to try something different with it.

Marilyn stripped of her original sash

I pulled a much more embellished belt from another dress (which can be purchased separately) and also grabbed some matching organza fabric and created a cover up to completely change the original neckline. I absolutely love the look I created, and it serves as the perfect demonstration of how a dress can be transformed with accessories. I always tell girls not to panic if they don’t find a dress that they love everything about , that if you can find one that ticks almost all of the boxes then it’s worth considering making the tweaks yourself (with the use of a seamstress if necessary) to achieve the look you want.

Marilyn after her transformation

This dress is called Marilyn and I find it to be a really flattering gown on lots of body types. It is a traditional full-skirted ballgown, but since the skirt isn’t gathered at the waist and remains fairly flat and skimming through the hip, it doesn’t add extra bulk around a tummy, it can even disguise a larger hip and thigh area. Since the waist is the emphasis it can make pear shaped girls look much slimmer and really exaggerates an hourglass. I also love the slightly curved neckline and sculpted bodice as it can accommodate and even minimise quite a full bust. But most of all I love the silhouette created from the full skirt made up of metres and metres of organza and how it falls. It seems very opulent and luxurious even though it is completely un-embellished.

It definitely is reminiscent of the classic 1950’s Dior New Look, that really never dates or looks costumey, so it is ideal both for girls with a vintage themed wedding and modern girls looking for something girlie and super flattering.
