Tanning Tips – Choosing the Correct Shade

With so many different tanning products available, and so many different shades to choose from, it’s hard to know exactly which one will suit you. To make life even more difficult, fake tan can now be applied in several forms, including creams, gels, sprays and mousses.

Tanning products: Mousse, gel, spray, wipes, cream

Tanning towel/wipes tend to give a lighter tan, as will tinted moisturisers and, depending on application, gradual tanning products.  However, most other forms of fake tan will generally provide the same tanning results.  For example, if you use St Tropez mousse you will be able to achieve the same tan tone as you would using their cream version of the exact same product.

How do you know which ‘dark’ tan is really dark and which ‘light’ tan is truly light?
The fact is, you don’t and won’t until you’re caked in the stuff.  It is always sensible to try out a patch test first. Apply the fake tan to a small area of skin, wash off after 8 hours and then you can judge the result. However, just like when you try a paint sample on a small part of your room, this is never a completely accurate test of what the entire end result will look like.

Bad tan. Tanning disaster! Wrong tan shade.

My advice for those of you who have fair skin and want to go slightly darker but are not sure how dark – do not go for ‘dark’ or even ‘medium’ tanning options. Instead, go for a ‘light’ shade and build it up to your preferred tone. A couple of applications may seem like a lot of effort, but it will be worth it as you will be in charge of the result!

If you already have a base tan, or have olive skin and want a dark result, then you can afford to go for a ‘dark’ option. However, if you are worried about the true colour and tone of the tan, then start with a ‘medium’ as it is likely that this will not show up too much on your skin, so you can judge the over all colour without a really strong result. If you are happy, then go for the ‘dark’ stuff! And enjoy looking fabulously tanned!

Bronze Leaf Spray Tan? Yes Please!

I’ve learnt to embrace my porcelain skin.  However, as we move from spring towards summer more and more flesh is slowly being uncovered and this year I have decided to join the ranks of the bronzed brigade. Why?  Well, in May, whether rain or shine, I’m dancing down an aisle in a white dress with my pins out – and my current white cloth on white skin look has me worried our guests will mistake me for a zombie bride.

I’m not a fake tan virgin but I’ve never had a spray tan.  It’s not because of being prudish or lacking in body confidence… it’s because of Friends – the one where Ross get a tan.  Putting the Friends episode to the back on my mind, I decided to jump at the chance to try out the acclaimed Bronze Leaf spray tan courtesy of Beauty Cloud’s friends at Vamp Beauty Salon on the Lisburn Road in Belfast.  I had heard so many good things about this product that I couldn’t wait to try it out for myself.

Vamp Beauty Salon

I was greeted by the fantastic Vamp staff and instantly put at ease with a cup of tea then shown up to a private room, told where to store my clothes and handed sticky paper pads to pop on my bare feet, a shower cap to protect my hair and a paper thong for a little bit of modesty.  I was left to get undressed and got ready for crunch time as I entered the spray tent.

My Vamp spray tan specialist was professional, friendly and fun which made all the difference as it doesn’t matter how confident you are, it’s never easy getting your boobs and body out in front of a stranger – especially when you’re asked to do ‘tanning tai chi’ by placing your legs and arms in lots of different positions.

The spray tan was different to what I was expecting.  I thought it might be cold and wet but instead, as it was being applied with what looked like a spray gun, it felt a little like someone using a hair drier but without the heat – just a slight tickling sensation.  Once the spraying was finished I popped on my clothes with no fear of damaging them or my new tan as Bronze leaf absorbs in a flash!

The spray was used for both general coverage and to give contours – both gave incredible results.  The tan gave a subtle sun kissed glow – a perfect step up in colour for my pale skin.  The contouring had me and my other half convinced I’d lost weight as it gave the impression of a more toned body.  The results were worth a day of walking around smelling like a digestive biscuit – a small sacrifice to make.  Needless to say, I will definitely be going back for more.

One final word of advice to any other spray tan novices out there – roll down your paper thong a little or this might happen:

Facing Fake Tan

Sometimes fake tan can be scary. Even the most experienced fake tanners can make a mistake here and there. So when it comes to tanning your face, a lot of people just simply opt out and don’t bother at all. In my opinion, if you’re already beautifully bronzing up your body then why shouldn’t you treat your face as well?

There are a lot of fake tans out there designed solely with your face in mind.  Ensure you use a facial fake tan, not one intended for your body as your face has different needs in order to achieve a natural even glow.

Fake Bake Face Self-Tan

One of the best facial fake tans out there is Fake Bake’s Face Platinum. This product is not just a fake tan, but also an anti-aging lotion. It combines Fake Bake’s signature triple tanning agents with the latest anti-ageing ingredient – PhytoCellTecTM Malus Domestica, created from stem cells extracted from the rare Swiss apple Uttwiler Spätlauber.  This is the kind of 2 for 1 combination we can’t say no to as your skin is left with a beautiful golden glow, added vitality and a more youthful complexion.

I adore this product. It develops over a few hours so I applied it before I went to sleep and rinsed it off with water the following morning to discover a gorgeous bronzed look. It is the most natural looking facial tan that I have tried – it doesn’t sit in your pores, so it isn’t obvious that you have been fake tanning.

For those of you, like me, who like a very dark tan you will need to apply the Fake Bake facial tan a couple of nights in a row to get your desired look but you won’t be hearing any complaints from me as the option to build up this facial tan is exactly what I was looking for as it allows you to tailor the depth of your tan.  This is a facial tan that caters for everyone!

I have quite oily skin.  This can make me a little nervous about tanning my face.  However, once this product is applied it is absorbed quickly, without any oily residue or shine.  This matt finish is an added bonus and it means you could consider applying this product in the morning and allow it to sit underneath your make up, or even use it as your base if you don’t mind having to wait a few hours for it to develop. It doesn’t dry out your skin either.  Instead, the anti-aging ingredients have a moisturising effect which ensures your skin is left soft and balanced.

Fake Bake Face Polish

Fake Bake also have an excellent Bamboo Buffering Face Polish. This gently, but effectively exfoliates your face, removing impurities and dead skin cells. This ensures a more even application. All you need to do is apply to wet skin, gently rub in, and rinse away. Trust me when I say it’s worth it. The sunflower seed oil and avocado fruit oil moisturises your skin, leaving it soft and fresh, creating the perfect base for your tan application.

I think everyone should give these great products a try. Don’t be afraid of facial fake tanning anymore, Fake Bake have made it very easy for you!

There’s a New A-Lister in Town

Recently, we’ve been spoilt with award ceremonies.  From the Oscars to the Brits…all of our favourite celebrities have been out in force, glamming it up and parting until the small hours of the morning.

But there is one attendee that has really stood out for me. No, I’m not talking about the extremely handsome Jared Leto and his amazingly silky hair…

Jared Leto

…I’m not talking about the gorgeous Pharell Williams and that ridiculous hat…

Pharell Williams

…I am in fact, talking about the new kid on the block, the thing that everyone wants to get their hands on…Vita Liberata.

Vita Liberata

If you are not familiar with this brand of fake tan, then shame on you. It is easily one of my favourites. And it’s not hard to see why the celebs are going crazy for it!

The lovely staff from Vita Liberata were backstage at this year’s Brits Spa. After spending two days beautifully tanning up our favorite celebs, the staff and the big head honchos at the O2 Arena, it’s no surprise that on the day of the Brits, the VL staff were completely bombarded by A-Listers who were going crazy for the stuff.

One of the most popular products seemed to be their Capture the Light illuminating skin finish. This amazing product comprises illuminating skin finishers with Opaque or Translucent coverage which can be used as stand-alone skin perfectors, or alongside the Vita Liberata tanning range to accentuate a natural bronze tan. It retails at just under £30 a bottle, and is worth every penny.

Beyonce and Katy Perry

James CordonBut if you don’t trust me, maybe Beyonce can convince you? Her team completely stocked up on this product before her amazing performance.  Not a Beyonce fan?  Then, perhaps Katy Perry can persuade you? Her makeup artist helped herself to lots of this magical stuff too.  And it seems it’s not only women who want an illuminated finish with James Corden grabbing a bag before the show began.

VL productsI strongly recommend trying out the Vita Liberata range. From their pHenomenal 2 – 3 week tan to their Anti Age Tanning products, they really do get it right every time. Their products not only create a beautiful, natural looking tan, they also cater for your skin’s needs.

I would say that this brand really is leading the way into the future of fake tanning! (Full range can be seen on their website – http://www.vitaliberata.co.uk/)

If it’s good enough for Beyonce…it’s good enough for me!

Review: Fake Bake – Luxurious Golden Bronze – 60 Minutes Self Tan Liquid & Professional Mitt

Fake Bake

With so many products on the market these days, it’s becoming more and more difficult for one to stand out. This tan however, is completely unique and heads and shoulders above most products out there.

“Why?” I hear you ask. It’s all in the name…’60 Minutes Self Tan Liquid’.

I am one of the biggest lovers of fake tan going but, as anyone who has ever regularly used fake tan will know, it takes dedication – especially when you have to sleep in the stuff once a week.

We do it because we love the result.  Looking like bronzed gods/goddesses never gets old! But, imagine a world where you can sleep comfortably every single night of the week, and still rock a gorgeous tan…

Sleep with Fake Tan on

…Fake Bake have now made this possible. Once applied, this tan can be washed off after just 1 hour.  1 HOUR!

The guidelines state that 1 hour will leave you with a golden tan, 2 hours result in a bronze tan, and 3 hours develop into a dark tan. Naturally, loving a darker hue, I left this product on for 3 hours before showering.  The results were amazing. It was dark and noticeable, whilst still managing to look extremely natural, and there wasn’t a streak or patch in sight. I would have been extremely impressed if I had had the same result after 8 – 12 hours, but to have this result after just 3 hours… it’s quite simply astounding.

However, it’s not just the final result that is amazing, the product in its entirety is brilliant. From the smell to the consistency, I could not find a single fault.  It has a lovely tropical scent – an unexpected surprise. I know you only have to have this tan on for 3 hours maximum but I would have happily accepted having this pleasing smell around me for longer.  The consistency is easy to control and blend.  It is absorbed straight into the skin, making sure you’re not left with a sticky residue.  It is also free of Parabens ensuring almost everyone can use this product to achieve a beautiful, natural looking tan.

Fake Bake Velvety Pink MittFakebake also include a cute, pink, velvety self tanning mitt. These new velvety mitts are absolutely brilliant. Not only do they feel fantastic, they almost always ensure the smoothest application (assuming you’ve done your basic tanning preparation of shaving, exfoliating and moisturising dry areas)!

They are spoiling us, right!? Well, prepare yourself reader… they have also thrown in a pair of application gloves to ensure you don’t end up with those dreaded orange hands!

Final verdict: a fantastic, ground breaking product.

Tanning Friday! Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Natural Bronze Gradual Tanning Moisturiser

False Tan, Fake Tan, Palmers Cocoa Butter, Golden Bronze, moisturiser

Just because it’s getting colder and darker, doesn’t mean we have to give up the on the dream of a suntan! As our skin has a pretty hard time facing the cold elements of winter, why not rid both pasty skin and dry, chapped skin all in one go!?

This week’s fake tan is by Palmers and uses their incredible cocoa butter formula. This truly is one of the most delicious smelling products out there. If like me, your partner despises the infamous smell of most fake tans…I very much doubt they dislike the smell of chocolate? Therefore, they will love this one.

False Tan, Fake Tan, Palmers Cocoa Butter, Golden Bronze, moisturiser

This tan formula is a gradual tan which I would recommend applying about 2 – 3 times a week to maintain a deep, luxurious tan. The colour is very natural and noticeable, and as it is essentially cocoa butter, it is extremely moisturising for your weather beaten skin, and a dream to apply! The only place I would not recommend applying this product is your face as it is fairly oily. This is fantastic for all of your body, but not for your face if you have oily or combination skin.

False Tan, Fake Tan, Palmers Cocoa Butter, Golden Bronze, moisturiser

The bottle has a handy pump to ensure a no mess application, and you can also apply with your hands if you do not have a tanning mitt as it goes on so smoothly! Just always wash your hands straight away once the tan is applied! You don’t want orange peel hands.

If you exfoliate your whole body once a week, and apply a few times during the days in between, you are guaranteed to have a beautiful natural looking tan throughout the winter months, as well as perfectly soft skin. As always, I recommended applying before bed, therefore allowing the tan to develop for around 8 hours while you sleep. Make sure you sleep in loose fitting, dark clothing.

As this amazing formula is only available at Boots, Superdrug and many other online and high street retailers for a generous price of just £5.35 – you have no excuse not to give it a try! Your skin deserves it!

GRAB YOURSELF A BARGAIN – Superdrug now have an offer on this great product meaning you will pick it up at a reduced price of  £3.56!! Click on the link below to get yours!

Fake Tanning Tip – Secret Ingredient

false tan, preparation, perfect, blotch freeAs I always say, fake tan preparation is essential! Your tan is only as perfect as the skin it’s applied to. I regularly remind readers of the perfect skin prep routine; however, there is one secret ingredient that many tanners find extremely useful.

There are areas of the body that fake tan clings to more and can make very orange. To avoid this happening, you can apply moisturiser to dryer areas of your body such as elbows, hands, feet, knees etc to stop the tan grabbing. However, sometimes if these areas are very dry, this is still not quite effective enough. For other areas such as the hair line and eyebrows, moisturisers are just never enough.

false tan, preparation, perfect, blotch free, vaselineSo say hello to your new best friend, Vaseline. Simply dot a small amount along your eye brows and next to your hair line. Dotting the Vaseline means that it will only stick to the hair and not the skin around it, therefore avoiding large, pale tide marks on the skin where there should be tan, but isn’t.

You can rub in as much Vaseline as you want to any of the dry areas of your body, this will ensure you do not get dark or cracked orange looking patches!
