A round-up of the 2014 BAFTA nail trends

The 2014 BAFTA TV Awards saw the crème de la crème of the acting world descend upon the West End of London.  It is always a stunningly glamorous evening with every actor & actress groomed to perfection from head to toe. Each  outfit worn is always finished off with some fabulous glittering accessories and not forgetting those all-important manicures.

This year’s BAFTA’s saw some definite trends in the nail department, with the nude and white colour palettes reigning supreme.  These tones are the perfect complimentary colour to choose for an event.  A simple nude manicure is enough to keep you looking effortlessly polished without detracting from your fabulous gown or accessories.  Millie Mackintosh provides a perfect example of a simple nude manicure, complimenting her intricately embellished mermaid-esque gown… I think she looks like a total Goddess!

2014 BAFTAs Red Carpet Nails

I personally love pale manicures on almond shaped nails as I think it adds a little something extra to this minimalist trend.

To achieve a beautiful natural nude manicure at home I would recommend Essie – Ballet Slippers http://www.boots.com/en/Essie-Nail-Polish-Ballet-Slippers-13-5ml_1343326/ which is actually one of the Queens favourite nail polishes!  For a chic white mani I always rely on my trusty old OPI – Alpine Snow http://www.beautybay.com/cosmetics/opi/alpinesnow/ currently reduced to £6.93 on BeautyBay.com… Bargain!

Closely following the nude trend we saw pastel colours sashaying down the red carpet on the celebs nails.  I am coveting Sheridan Smith’s edgy new hair colour complete with matching lilac manicure.

Masters of the pastel coloured nail polishes, Barry M always has the widest range of colours to choose from… Not only that they are a total steal at only £3.99!  Prickly Pear & Sugar apple are my fave colours at the moment! http://www.barrym.com/products/nails/effects/gelly-nail-effects.html

Jewel toned nails are a fail-safe for red carpet events  – mimicking the rich shimmering colours of Ruby’s, Sapphire’s and Emerald’s.  At the BAFTA’s all ranges of reds were a firm favourite for many celebs, with the odd Sapphire blue thrown in for good measure.

Beautiful jewel toned nail polishes are in fashion throughout every season so they are always easy to get your hands on.  My all-time favourite has to be Chanel – Rouge Noir.  This is a colour that was released in 1994 and famously worn by Uma Thurman in the movie Pulp Fiction. You can buy it online or in store for £18, a little pricey but totally worth it!

Keep your eye out for my upcoming posts; I will be keeping you up to date with all of the latest trends and colours you should be wearing on your nails this season along with a few exciting new product reviews!

Upcoming Bridal Trends for the New Season

It’s that time of year again! Time for us to go shopping and select the gowns that will be gracing our rails next year! I absolutely love the opportunity to see literally thousands of beautiful dresses, and I adore the challenge of picking out which ones we want to buy for our boutique.

As I mentioned in previous blogs, bridal gowns don’t go through massive transformations from season to season, the styles simply evolve. So from seeing the introduction of sleeves and necklines at the last collection launches, this time high necks and sleeves were everywhere!

Last time the ‘new thing’ was the peplum, and as expected a lot more designers had picked up on this trend, and to be honest while I really disliked them before, this time I was tempted. I’ve ordered a pretty satin number with a lace bodice and peplum, we shall see! I’m still not convinced that it’s a very bridal appropriate look, but I’m sure on the right girl it will look absolutely amazing.

I also predicted a proliferation of the ‘Gatsby’ look, and I’m delighted to say I was right! The 1920’s influence was everywhere! As a history of Art geek I am fascinated by the 1920’s and the Art Deco aesthetic, so I have to say I got very excited when I saw the variety of Deco inspired pieces by our accessory designer Richard Designs.  I swear I could have bought everything!

On the Gatsby theme, my favourite dress of the show was a little number by Sottero & Midgley called ‘Lyla’. As the model sashayed down the catwalk towards me, I was open-mouthed!  From the fully beaded column silhouette to the fluttery little sleeves this dress epitomised the new collections for me, and whilst the price point is a smidge higher than we usually go, I fell in love with this dress and absolutely had to have her!

But the ‘Roaring Twenties’ weren’t the only period of fashion history showing their influence, as is usually the case the 1950’s Dior silhouette was being reinvented by lots of bridal designers. Some of the most beautiful dresses we bought featured gorgeous tulle circle skirts, with nipped in waists and fabulous bodice detail. This is a silhouette that we love at Cathedral Gowns, and luckily so do our brides, and I hope they continue to love them since we somehow ordered five of this silhouette! But whereas the ones we currently have in stock are mostly strapless styles, these ones all feature either built up necklines, bateau necklines and even some with sleeves.

Following on from this look we’ve also ordered a few more short bridal gowns. This is a look we’ve only ever dabbled in, but our girls are loving them right now, so we had to buy more. My favourite is a cute little textured corded lace number with sweet little cap sleeves called ‘Kitty’ – I cannot wait to see what kind of bride finds her!

A lot of the newest looks feature a lot of sleeves and some of our designers are even making them detachable. So clever! I love that the designers are getting creative and flexible with their designs. I love the notion of having a sleeved more demure look for your ceremony and then removing them for the party.

In terms of silhouette I noticed that the designers were showing either very full or very fitted dresses with very little in between. I searched for a-lines and they were hard to find! But it was worth the search since I found some real gems, I even found some pretty lace a-line gowns too that I am majorly excited about.

There were still a lot of designers showing very fitted lace gowns, but their new take on this was an emphasis on texture instead of sparkle. The one I am most excited about is ‘Paula’ by Sottero & Midgley! This dress is lush and features a gorgeous scattering of textured flowers as well as a stunning veil to match.

If there was an overall theme to the new season dresses, it would be detail! I think out of more than thirty dresses we ordered, only three could be described as plain, and even then they did have unusual design features that made them stand out. So I hope the brides whose weddings are Autumn 2014 onwards are ready for detail!

Catwalk looks for Men

Thanks to the like of David Beckham, male grooming is the norm now and guys are following trends closely,  if not closer than us ladies !!! So this blog is dedicated to men only .

To see emerging style the best place to look for inspiration is the catwalk and none better than Milan, here’s just a few of Milano 2014 predictions.

On the Savatore Ferragamo show one of the prominent styles was  the ‘trendy Fringe’ .

Savatore Ferragamo Trendy Fringe

To make the fringe the visual part of this haircut the sides and back are a traditional short style all graduating to the fringe , leaving a long fringe to pull across the forehead giving a modern groomed look. Adding the smallest bit of a spray wax and pulled in to position to recreate this look, one of my favourites to confess!

If short short is not your ‘thing’ no worries because House of Etro models trended a slightly longer look. A very cool look that is easy to wear! A tousled casual style just slicked back with a little gel to add texture and hold it in position giving that effortless too cool for school look!!!!

House of Etro Fringe Tousled

For our longer haired gents do not despair because longer graced the runaway as well ! These tresses were reflecting a feel of those early rock years. This edgy style is so easily achieve by just scrunching in a small amount of mousse to give that texture and oomph !!

long mens hair catwalk runway 2014

The wild card on the runway is not for the faint hearted and was in the one and only Vivienne Westwood show ( can you tell she’s one of my favourites ) . Vivienne pushes it outside the box again by having her models sport bandanas on the catwalk! Us ladies love them on bad hair days so guys why not give it try!!

Now guys there’s no excuse for not be a Milano man we’ve got the weather now you’ve got styles !!!

‘Sheer’ Summer Fashion 2013

Sheer fashion is the ultimate statement trend for Spring/Summer 13!  It has been all over the runways this season.  Sheer can be worn classy or sassy, your outfit could just have panels of sheer or it could be totally see through for a seductive look!  It’s entirely up to you! I’ve searched online for the sheer trend on the high-street. Here are some of my best picks! (Click on the images to whizz straight to the shop’s website)

I think this is a perfect summer dress for going out in. It is practical and comfortable. I love the uneven hemline and the floaty movement of the fabric. It is the kind of dress that can be dressed up or worn casually. To dress it up I would add a pair of stilettos and a delicate bracelet with a detailed necklace and possibly a metallic belt. This dress would work well with sandals or wedges also.  A vest top in a contrasting colour such as red or white would add more colour to the dress if you wanted a casual look. Available at ASOS.com

I really love this sheer jacket. It is the perfect summer jacket and is the kind of garment that will go with anything you chose to team it up with. I would wear it with light blue skinny jeans and wedges with a plain, strong coloured vest top and a long necklace to create a casual summer look. Available at Urban Outfitters.

I love the colour of this dress. It is so fresh and summery. I think the sheer overskirt moves beautifully when walking and really makes the dress. I would change the belt and team the belt with the colour of the accessories. I think strong bright colours such as pink and maroon would work well with the colour of this dress. Colourful bracelets are a must for this outfit.

This is a midi dress with a spilt hem and sheer panels. I think the sheer panels contrast well with the material of the dress and create a unique look. I would wear this with black heels and black/silver bracelets for a classy and sophisticated summer look. Available at TOPSHOP.
